LIZARD ACTIVITY

Predator eradication began in October 2025, with rapid reductions across all key pest species and early signs of ecological recovery.

Measured Impact

As of March 2026

Pest Reduction

Mice: 98% → ~12% (~5% one-night tracking)

Rats, possums, mustelids, cats, hedgehogs: 0%

Rabbits: 2-3 remaining

Lizard Activity

Tracking increased: 26% → 54%

Current: 60% inside vs 26% outside

Restoration

2,100+ native plants

>90% survival rate

24 rock habitats created

~90 tonnes of schist imported

UPDATE

As of late May 2026, mice tracked at 0% in both the 1 and 7-night tracking index inside the sanctuary!

However, thermal surveys found the remaining rabbits have bred and we are back to ~10 inside the fence.

Despite being in place for less than a year, these results indicate an early ecological response following predator control.

Restoring the Habitat

Habitat restoration is underway, with all large woody weeds removed and ongoing control of emerging seedlings.

Of the 2,100 native plants established, more than 90% have survived their first year.

Lizards are already utilising newly created artificial rock habitats, showing early uptake of constructed refuges.
